The Preventive Medicine service of the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) has been awarded the prize for Best Communication and an honorable mention at the II Congress of the Canary Society of Hospital Preventive Medicine.

The accolades, presented at the Hospital General Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín, recognize two research projects focused on environmental biosecurity and the epidemiological surveillance of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The lead author for both studies is Anabela Enebral.
The award for Best Communication went to the study ‘Evaluation and management of environmental biosecurity risk in case of air conditioning failure in a surgical area’. This research analyzes the response to a technical incident in the air conditioning system of a surgical area, with a focus on microbiological control and decision-making to ensure environmental safety.
The honorable mention was granted to the work ‘Beyond childhood: temporal and age-based pattern of respiratory syncytial virus prior to the introduction of adult vaccination’. This investigation examines the epidemiological behavior of RSV in a hospital setting, analyzing temporal differences in its circulation across age groups. Notably, it highlights that the peak of cases in the pediatric population precedes that in individuals over 80 years old, a finding of interest for understanding virus transmission dynamics and strengthening epidemiological surveillance.
These awards highlight the research efforts of the HUC's Preventive Medicine service and its contribution to scientific knowledge in essential areas of healthcare, such as environmental biosecurity and the monitoring of infectious agents.
