Nueva Canarias has criticized the "incompetence" of the Canary Islands Government, led by Fernando Clavijo, in addressing the economic crisis stemming from the conflict in Iran, pointing to the non-execution of 1.051 million euros in 2025.

The nationalist party has held the Canary Islands Government responsible for its alleged inability to implement its own measures to mitigate the crisis's effects, despite an initial budget of over 12.3 billion euros for the current year. According to Nueva Canarias, the regional executive, formed by Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular, is relinquishing its self-governance capacity at a time when the islands need decisive leadership to support vulnerable families and the productive sector against rising inflation.

"The Canary Islands now need a government that governs, that makes decisions."

Luis Campos · Spokesperson for Nueva Canarias in the regional Parliament
Luis Campos, spokesperson for Nueva Canarias in the regional Parliament, has urged the Government of Pedro Sánchez to relax fiscal rules and debt levels. However, he emphasized that the main obstacle for the islands lies in the internal management of the Canary Islands Executive itself, under the direction of CC and the PP. Campos criticized the Clavijo cabinet's tendency to blame Madrid for local problems, arguing that the root of the issue is within the autonomous community itself.
The leader of Nueva Canarias described the Government's stance of claiming no room to act against the crisis as "unacceptable." He recalled that CC and the PP have an initial budget of over 12.3 billion euros for 2026 and failed to execute 1.051 million euros in 2025 alone, totaling 3.43 billion euros unspent over the last three years. Campos pointed out that while the Government argues a lack of resources, a significant amount of budgeted money remains unused.

"One thing is not being able to incur debt, and quite another is not executing available funds."

Luis Campos · Secretary General of Nueva Canarias-BC
For Nueva Canarias, the strategy of CC and the PP is to "deliberately mix concepts" to justify their inaction, resorting to "disinformation" and "fake news" in a "Trumpist" style. Campos insisted that the billions of euros not executed have a direct impact on the lives of Canarian citizens, translating into "unbuilt housing, unreduced waiting lists, and public services that do not improve."
The nationalist leader also denounced Clavijo's "late, insufficient, and socially unjust" response to the crisis, lacking concrete proposals for low and middle incomes. He contrasted this slowness with the speed shown by CC and the PP in September 2023, when they approved a decree that subsidized 99.9% of the Inheritance and Donations tax, benefiting the 6,000 wealthiest people in the community. Campos concluded that, after three years of management, the problem is not isolated but demonstrates a "failed model."
