The Nursing Union (Satse) has spoken out to condemn a racist assault suffered by a nurse at the Hospital Insular. This event, according to the organization, represents a «turning point» and an «extremely serious and unprecedented» occurrence for the nursing collective in the Canary Islands.
“"It cannot be normalized that nursing professionals work under threats, aggressions, and now also with racist attacks."
Juan Trenzado, provincial secretary of Satse in Las Palmas, expressed the union's concern, noting that the assaulted professional did not feel supported by the healthcare administration. Violence against nursing staff is a growing problem, with a 29.17% increase in assaults on nursing and physiotherapy personnel of the Canarian Health Service (SCS), rising from 192 in 2024 to 248 in 2025.
In response to this situation, Satse Canarias has announced the possibility of calling for protests in front of hospitals and health centers. The union demands the implementation of urgent measures to safeguard the security of healthcare professionals, including an increase in security personnel, especially in high-risk areas such as emergencies and primary care.
Furthermore, Satse considers it crucial to improve alert systems and optimize immediate response protocols for any aggression. They emphasize the importance of launching public awareness campaigns to eradicate violence and racism in the healthcare sector. Finally, the union insists on reinforcing professional training for conflict prevention and management, and on the rigorous application of sanctions against aggressors, guaranteeing assistance and legal support for victims.
