The meeting, scheduled for this Wednesday, was primarily intended to address the situation of unaccompanied migrant minors hosted in Canarias, Ceuta, and Melilla, and to update mechanisms for their relocation. However, the non-attendance of autonomous communities governed by the PP prevented the forum from taking place due to a lack of quorum.
“"It is an absolute institutional disloyalty, a lack of respect, and an anti-democratic act."
Torres emphasized that the Popular Party's coordinated decision to instruct its counselors not to attend such a relevant body as the Sectoral Conference demonstrates a "lack of humanity." Despite this setback, the minister assured that the law would proceed.
Since the reform of article 35 of the immigration law last year, regions exceeding their reception capacity can declare a migratory contingency, allowing for the relocation of migrant minors to resources distributed across the peninsula. Torres regretted that the PP "constantly puts spokes in the wheels" of this initiative.
The Canarian minister recalled statements by the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who had expressed satisfaction at hosting Ukrainian children, contrasting this with the current directive not to attend a meeting for minors from Africa. Torres expressed his hope that the PP of Canarias and Melilla would react to the stance of their party colleagues.
