The trial, taking place this Tuesday in the First Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas, aims to conclude the judicial process for these three defendants. It is expected that the parties will reach a conformity agreement, resulting in a firm sentence.
The main case was already tried in November, but the situation of these three accused remained pending as they were at large. In the previous hearing, the Prosecutor's Office and the lawyers of the six accused who attended the trial reached an agreement, resulting in sentences ranging from ten months to two and a half years in prison for crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation, membership in a criminal group, and against road safety.
According to the indictment from the Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Las Palmas, the three pending accused did not directly participate in the execution of the robberies. Their role consisted of collaborating with the organization by renting vehicles that the gang used to travel to the premises, monitor the areas, and facilitate escape after the assaults.
The Public Ministry maintains that the group used rental cars to avoid raising suspicion and to hinder the identification of its members. These vehicles were rented by third parties, as many of the main accused did not have a driving license or sought to disassociate themselves from the events.
Specifically, the Prosecutor's Office attributes to the accused having gone to Gran Canaria Airport or rental companies to contract vehicles that were subsequently used in various assaults or as support cars. In return for this collaboration, they allegedly received money or crack cocaine doses.
These events are part of a series of robberies committed between late July and August 2023 in several gaming halls in Gran Canaria. Affected establishments include premises in Vecindario, Arinaga, Santa María de Guía, El Sebadal, Telde, Arucas, and Cruce de Arinaga.
The material perpetrators entered the premises with their faces covered and carrying knives, metal bars, or other intimidating objects, while other group members remained outside on lookout or prepared for escape. Among the investigated assaults, one stands out on July 31, 2023, at the Infinity Café Doctoral Betting Hall in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, where 10,000 euros were stolen. Days later, the Kasino de Arinaga was assaulted, with a haul of 17,104.90 euros.
The accusation also includes robberies or attempts at the La Atalaya Gaming Hall in Santa María de Guía; a hall in El Sebadal; the Vive la Suerte Hall in Telde; the Arucas Bingo; and the Sportium at Cruce de Arinaga. The total civil liability claimed exceeds 35,000 euros.
Initially, the Prosecutor's Office sought sentences of up to seven and a half years in prison for the main accused for continuous robbery with violence and intimidation in a public establishment, committed with a dangerous instrument, plus two years for membership in a criminal group. For the collaborators in vehicle rental, sentences of up to four and a half years in prison were requested.
