Thousands of volunteers are gearing up for Pope Leo XIV's visit to Gran Canaria on June 11th, focusing on attendee safety and well-being.

Preparations are underway for the unprecedented visit of Pope Leo XIV to Gran Canaria on June 11th, an event expected to draw thousands. The volunteer program is a key component, with many individuals eager to assist in operational capacities.
Pedro Ramos, the island's volunteer coordinator, stresses the importance of maintaining a calm and rational approach, particularly in potential evacuation scenarios. This guidance is being provided to team leaders who will oversee groups of up to 10 people, ensuring attendee welfare at various events, including the large Mass at the Gran Canaria Stadium.
Designated 'chief' volunteers have received specialized training from the National Police. This two-hour course covered self-protection measures, basic first aid, and the PAS protocol (Protect, Alert, Support). These leaders will then impart this essential knowledge to their assigned teams.
Pedro Ramos, drawing on his experience in emergency response rooms, will also focus on transferring communication management skills to the volunteers. He notes that the Canarian society may not yet fully grasp the historic significance of the event, which is being approached with a mix of excitement and stress.
Despite the significant responsibility, a climate of "motivation and predisposition" prevails among the volunteers. Team leaders have shown proactivity and a strong desire to participate, understanding that their primary role is to ensure pilgrims can enjoy the encounter, regardless of whether they personally see the Pope.
In the coming weeks, further meetings and calls will finalize assignments, ensuring all registered volunteers are integrated to support Leo XIV's visit.
