Strong crosswinds and wind shear at the airports of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura have led to the diversion of eight flights, mostly to Tenerife South Airport, to ensure passenger safety.

Adverse weather conditions, characterized by strong crosswinds and wind shear, have significantly impacted air operations in the eastern Canary Islands. As of 2:00 PM on April 9, 2026, a total of eight flights were forced to change their original destination, with Tenerife South Airport serving as the primary alternative landing point.
In Fuerteventura, five aircraft had to be diverted. Among them, a flight from Tenerife North and another from Gran Canaria, which returned to their departure points after attempting to land. Additionally, three international flights originating from Seville, Madrid, and Warsaw were also rerouted to Tenerife South Airport.
A similar situation occurred in Gran Canaria, where two flights from Gothenburg and Bristol, respectively, had to land in Tenerife South. Likewise, in Lanzarote, two flights departing from London Stansted and Dublin were also diverted to the same airport in Tenerife.

"We continue with diversions due to strong winds and wind shear in the Canary Islands."
