Starting this Thursday, personnel from the Field Artillery Regiment No. 93 (RACA 93) and the XVI Sappers Battalion (BZ XVI), integrated into the “Canarias” Tactical Group, will conduct foot and vehicle patrols on the islands of La Gomera and El Hierro.
Among the scheduled activities, BZ XVI personnel will hold a static equipment exhibition in the square of Valverde Town Hall, in El Hierro. Meanwhile, RACA 93 will perform a flag-raising ceremony at the Torre del Conde Park in the capital of La Gomera on April 21.
The Ministry of Defense has stated that the deployment aims to strengthen vigilance, exert a deterrent effect, and guarantee the security of terrestrial spaces under national sovereignty on the islands. These actions are part of permanent operations, considered an essential contribution of the Armed Forces to national security in peacetime.
This initiative not only facilitates effective environmental surveillance and a deeper understanding of the terrain and social reality of the islands but also promotes the integration of military personnel into the local community and consolidates the presence of the Armed Forces in the territory.
Lieutenant General Julio Salom, head of the Canary Islands Command of the Army, also serves as Commander of the Terrestrial Operational Command, a role that involves planning presence and surveillance operations not only in the Canary Islands but also in Ceuta, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands.
