The Director General of Hemodonación and Hemotherapy, Francisco Rodríguez, and the President of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, met on September 17 to strengthen blood donation promotion on the island.
The Canarian Health Service (SCS) and the Cabildo of La Gomera will collaborate to increase blood donation on the island. The Director General of Hemodonación and Hemotherapy of the SCS, Francisco Rodríguez, and the president of the insular corporation, Casimiro Curbelo, held a working meeting on September 17 to explore collaboration avenues between both institutions.
Also attending the meeting, held at the Cabildo's facilities, were the third vice-president and insular minister of Social Services, Education, Culture, and Sports, Rosa Elena García, and the technician from the Communication and Marketing Area of the General Directorate of Hemodonación and Hemotherapy, Idaira Reyes. Actions to facilitate the involvement of entities and social agents in future campaigns targeting residents and visitors were analyzed.
Francisco Rodríguez highlighted the importance of the Cabildo's support in promoting donation, expressing gratitude for the reception and disposition shown, and expressing confidence that new collaboration avenues will emerge to bring donation campaigns closer to the people of La Gomera.
Among the measures analyzed was the participation of Hemodonación and Hemoterapia in the sports event ‘Gomera Paradise Sky Race’ to promote blood donation during the weekend. Additionally, the organization of a blood donation marathon at the end of the year was proposed to reinforce reserves for the Christmas period of 2026.
The Cabildo of La Gomera proposed reinforcing campaign dissemination through the branding of various bus lines and the use of a screen in a bus shelter to project promotional material.
To be eligible to donate blood, individuals must be between eighteen and 65 years old (up to sixty for a first-time donation), weigh over fifty kilograms, be in generally good health, and not be pregnant. For any doubts, one can call the free donor helpline 900 234 061 or consult the website efectodonacion.com.
