The Popular University of Agüimes is consolidating itself as a benchmark in Gran Canaria for its extensive educational offerings and commitment to cultural access for all groups.

The Canary Association of Popular Universities (ACUP) has praised the work of the Popular University of Agüimes, calling it an exemplary model to be replicated in other municipalities across the islands. The association highlights its extensive program of courses and workshops, as well as its efforts to facilitate access to activities through reduced fees for vulnerable individuals.
Marco Antonio González Mesa, president of the ACUP, met with the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, and the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Abildo González, to evaluate the annual collaboration and plan for the 2026-2027 academic year. González Mesa emphasized that Agüimes is an example because it "brings culture closer to citizens" through subsidies and strives to ensure that "vulnerable individuals or those in worse economic situations can access courses and workshops."
The decentralized model of the Popular University of Agüimes, which distributes its activities across neighborhoods through cultural centers and social venues, was another highlighted strength. "It is a decentralized effort that allows courses to reach its entire territory," stated the ACUP president, describing the municipality as "pioneering and exemplary."
For his part, Councilor Abildo González described the Popular University as "a fundamental resource for revitalizing cultural, social, and leisure life in our neighborhoods." He expressed satisfaction with the increase in offerings for the new academic year and assured that the City Council will continue to focus on increasing available places based on demand.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the Popular University of Agüimes will offer a total of 1,700 places distributed across more than 80 training activities. The range of disciplines includes physical exercise, dance, languages, visual arts, crafts, digital technologies, music, fashion, and culture. The enrollment period is open until September 25th, with monthly reopenings for vacant spots. Detailed information is available at the cultural centers in Agüimes, Arinaga, Cruce de Arinaga, Las Rosas, and Montaña de Los Vélez.
