The La Gomera Island Council debated the creation of the Insular School Council, an initiative by IxLG that only faced a dissenting vote from ASG, Casimiro Curbelo's party.
The spokesperson for Iniciativa por La Gomera (IxLG), Aarón Rodríguez Ramos, expressed regret over the decision by the ASG party, led by Casimiro Curbelo, to vote alone against the establishment of the Insular School Council of La Gomera during the plenary session held today at the Island Council.
The proposal, presented by IxLG, received the backing of all opposition groups, including PSOE and Coalición Canaria, highlighting a broad consensus on the need to create a permanent body for educational participation and coordination on the island.
Rodríguez Ramos emphasized that the initiative stems from the conviction that "La Gomera needs stable structures for participation, coordination, and planning that allow for anticipating problems, defending the island's real needs, and avoiding unnecessary uncertainties for students and families".
The spokesperson recalled the legislative tradition recognizing the importance of educational community participation through collegiate bodies like School Councils, a philosophy reflected in both the Canary Islands Law on Non-University Education and the Law on School Councils of the Canary Islands.
“
"Education cannot be managed solely from offices far removed from the daily reality of our schools. We need a space where students, teachers, families, administrative and service staff, town councils, and other agents linked to the educational field can actively participate in defining La Gomera's educational priorities."
Iniciativa por La Gomera argues that, despite ASG's negative vote, a majority will eventually form to establish the future Insular School Council, envisioned as a stable body for representation and consultation to channel demands, identify needs, coordinate administrations, and improve educational territorial cohesion.
The IxLG spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the support from PSOE and CC, considering that the debate demonstrated a real demand to strengthen the participation of the Gomera educational community in decision-making.
“
"We regret that ASG has decided to reject a proposal that precisely seeks to bring voices together, foster institutional co-responsibility, and improve educational planning. It is difficult to understand why a tool aimed at giving more participation to those who experience education daily is voted against."
Rodríguez Ramos concluded by reaffirming Iniciativa por La Gomera's commitment to participatory, planned education adapted to the island's reality, assuring that the party will continue to promote initiatives to strengthen the educational community's voice on matters affecting the island's present and future.
