The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands has inaugurated the 34th Education Inspection conferences in La Gomera, a crucial event to analyze the educational system and reinforce child protection.

The gathering, which brings together inspectors from across the archipelago, focuses on the motto “The protection of minors, a shared responsibility,” highlighting the need for close collaboration between administrations and professionals to ensure safe educational environments. The initiative emphasizes that comprehensive child protection extends beyond the school setting, requiring the coordinated involvement of educational, judicial, social, and health institutions.
These conferences represent a fundamental space for training and reflection, seeking to advance towards a shared intervention model. Prevention, early detection, and joint action are essential pillars for safeguarding the rights of minors and improving coexistence in educational centers.
The opening ceremony was attended by José Manuel Cabrera, Deputy Minister of Education; Francisco R. Machado, Deputy Minister of Vocational Training and Professional Qualifications; Marcos Rodríguez, General Inspector of Education; and Casimiro Curbelo, President of the Cabildo de La Gomera. The initial session served to identify the main challenges facing the educational system and the inspection service itself.
The first day began with an inaugural conference by Dr. Clara Martínez, a doctor in Law, specialist in the legal protection of children, and collaborator in the technical design of Organic Law 8/2021 on Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against Violence. Martínez addressed the new legal framework in the educational field, emphasizing the supervision of regulatory compliance, the evaluation of protection protocols, and the promotion of safe and protective school environments.
Subsequently, a round table was held on child protection from the perspective of different autonomous communities. Participants included Marcos Rodríguez, General Inspector of Education of the Canary Islands, along with Silvia Purificación Moratalla and Encarnación Castillo, inspection managers in Castilla-La Mancha and Aragón, respectively. This session analyzed action protocols for situations of bullying, violence, or risk, as well as prevention, detection, and coordinated intervention strategies among administrations, highlighting the key role of inspection in guaranteeing student rights.
The afternoon session included the presentation of experiences from educational centers in La Gomera, such as that of the IES San Sebastián de La Gomera, coordinated by Ana Luisa Valeriano, focused on student involvement in improving school coexistence. The experience of the CEIP Ruiz de Padrón, developed by Nicolás Fernández and Clara Isabel Medina, was also presented, oriented towards learning good treatment and peaceful conflict resolution, applying the morning's content to practical settings.
The second session, scheduled to begin on Friday, will incorporate the perspective of other areas involved in child protection. This will include the role of the Public Prosecutor's Office, with the intervention of Marta Dávila, prosecutor of the juvenile section, and the work of technical teams in the juvenile field, through a presentation by Dr. Miguel Vicente Quintero, a psychologist.
Additionally, a round table will be held on coordinated intervention from different professional fields, with the participation of social workers María Teresa Manduca and Eva Cid; David López, Sub-inspector of the judicial group of the juvenile section of the Canarian Local Police; and prosecutor Marta Dávila. The closing ceremony will be led by José Manuel Cabrera, Deputy Minister of Education.
The choice of La Gomera as the venue for this edition reaffirms the Ministry's commitment to territorial balance and the decentralization of such meetings, fostering participation and the exchange of experiences in an environment close to the reality of the islands' educational centers.
