The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has presented new material and equipment for the island of La Gomera, aiming to boost its preparedness for incidents involving multiple casualties. This initiative seeks to ensure effective initial intervention until reinforcements arrive from Tenerife or Gran Canaria.
The new Immediate Health Response Teams (ERSI) will be stationed at the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Hospital. These teams include an inflatable tent for an advanced medical post, lighting systems, triage cards for victim classification, and stretchers. Additionally, supplies for circulatory and respiratory care, immobilization, a semi-automatic defibrillator (DESA), pediatric and neonatal materials, and personal protective equipment for healthcare personnel have been provided.
Complementing the advanced medical post is a Rapid Intervention Vehicle (VIR) from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), equipped like a mobile medical unit, which expands the island's fleet of health resources. The presentation was attended by health authorities and representatives from the Cabildo of La Gomera.
An agreement signed between the Cabildo, the Health Services Management, and the SUC ensures the permanent stationing of the trailer with material for mass casualty incidents on the island. Activation procedures have been established, and training is being conducted for healthcare personnel on handling the equipment and logistics for catastrophes.
