During a plenary session held last Friday to approve a budget modification of over 28 million euros, the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera directed harsh words at the mixed group's councilors, specifically those from Iniciativa por La Gomera, whom he called “smoke sellers.”
The island leader urged the mayors of his party present in the Corporation to “dismantle” the opposition to prevent them from gaining representation in the upcoming municipal elections. This incident occurred in a context where the plenary sessions of the Cabildo de La Gomera are not publicly broadcast, making it difficult to access the exact wording of the debates.
“"We have to start telling citizens that they are a scourge for public services and for citizens. Because they only lie."
The criticisms arose during the debate on a significant budget modification, representing over 34% of the island's budget approved just five months ago. The mixed group had expressed its rejection of this modification, questioning the urgency of its approval and the reduction of the deadline for submitting amendments.
The spokesperson for Iniciativa por La Gomera criticized the lack of specificity in some budget items, such as three million euros for the public housing company Visocan without specifying actions, 1.3 million for land acquisition without a known destination, and 50,000 euros for the bishopric of the Nivariense diocese with an uncertain purpose.
“"I believe we are going to do it. We are going to make a specific pamphlet dedicated to lies. Let's see if this game ends now."
The president of the Cabildo, who left the PSOE in 2011 to found the Agrupación Socialista Gomera, also extended his criticisms to national politics, lamenting “left-wing radicalisms.” He concluded his intervention by threatening the opposition with the publication of a pamphlet dedicated to “lies.”
