The San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council undertook an extensive intervention on its beaches to ensure their optimal condition for the Easter Week holidays, mitigating the damage caused by storm Therese.
The mayor of San Sebastián de La Gomera, Angélica Padilla, emphasized that the municipal priority was to contain and repair the damage caused by the storm, ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens. Infrastructure repair and public space cleaning began immediately, even before the weather alert was lifted.
Padilla also noted that storm Therese was not the only adverse weather event of the year, as the archipelago has experienced constant intense winds, rain, and swell in recent months. This required additional actions beyond those planned for the beaches, which were already prepared for the holiday period before March 28.
Regarding the drought and water emergency, the mayor recalled that the use of showers on the beaches had to be prohibited, and consequently, the Blue Flag could not be requested. This measure was taken to prioritize water supply to homes and businesses, a situation that, fortunately, has improved with recent rains.
For his part, the Councilor for Beaches, Agustín Herrera, reported on the comprehensive replacement of the access walkways to the bathing areas. New fiber-reinforced concrete walkways have been installed, offering greater resistance and durability, improving comfort and safety for people with reduced mobility and baby strollers.
Following the storm, Herrera confirmed that affected areas have been repaired with urgent actions, and the project to declare emergency works for the staircase damaged by the swell is ready. Additionally, the number of umbrellas has been increased, the recreational area and the jetty have been repaired by replacing wood and urban furniture, with plans to implement new services and improvements for the summer season.
