The spokesperson for Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) has requested the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands to detail progress on the installation of a helicopter base in Alajeró, crucial for supporting fire intervention teams in La Gomera.
During the government control session in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the ASG representative emphasized that combating forest fires on an island like La Gomera must be viewed as a fundamental policy of security, prevention, and territorial protection, rather than merely a punctual emergency response.
“
"The helicopter base in La Gomera, in the municipality of Alajeró, is fundamental because it allows, in the event of an incident, the immediate transfer of personnel to the location where a fire or conflagration may occur."
The project, initiated in the previous legislature and drafted since 2024, is awaiting necessary authorizations, including those from AENA. According to available information, meetings were held during 2025 to coordinate technical aspects and expedite administrative procedures.
The ASG leader underscored the importance of this infrastructure to improve fire response, reduce intervention times, and enhance the safety of both the population and emergency personnel, especially given the effects of climate change.
The planned infrastructure includes three buildings for crew, offices, and operational elements of the Forest Fire Intervention and Reinforcement Teams (EIRIF), as well as a helicopter hangar and four helipads. Spaces are also planned to accommodate external reinforcements when needed.
“
"It is important to have this project and its investment as soon as possible, because the EIRIF intervention teams can allow us to solve problems that, logically, we could not solve otherwise."
Therefore, the minister has been asked to detail the current status of the Alajeró base's processing and the remaining steps to materialize this infrastructure, which ASG considers strategic for prevention, coordination, and response to forest emergencies in La Gomera.
