The La Palma Health Area is extending the 'From Fragility to Strength' physical activity program to Breña Alta, targeting individuals over 70 to improve their strength, balance, and autonomy.

The ‘From Fragility to Strength’ program, launched in 2024 in the Las Breñas Basic Health Zone, is now expanding to Breña Alta this October. This initiative by the La Palma Health Area, under the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Health, aims to reduce frailty and fall risk in individuals over 70, while promoting personal autonomy and delaying dependency.
The first phase involves identifying interested participants through the Family Care Units of the health centers in both municipalities. Subsequently, potential participants undergo screening with physical tests to assess functional capacity and a medical evaluation to ensure physical activity is not contraindicated.
Included users are then referred to their respective town halls, where a specialist in physical and sports activities leads daily 1-hour sessions, three times a week. These exercises focus on improving strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. The program also includes ongoing participant monitoring.
Individuals interested in joining this initiative within the Las Breñas Basic Health Zone can seek further information at their reference health centers and town halls.
