The meeting, held on Friday, April 10, at the Hospital Universitario de La Palma, included various authorities and members of the association. Attendees included Fernando Gómez-Pamo, Director General of Mental Health and Addictions for the SCS; Francisco Ferraz, Manager of Health Services for La Palma; Luis Vidal, Head of Psychiatry at the hospital; association members María Paz Magdalena and María Ángeles León; and the deputy for La Palma, Diana Lorenzo.
During the gathering, the implementation of the Canary Islands Mental Health Plan and specific measures to address the emotional consequences of the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption were highlighted. The creation of two essential resources was emphasized: the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Day Center and the San Andrés y Sauces Night Unit, both aimed at improving care for individuals with severe mental disorders.
Furthermore, the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has driven improvements in prevention programs and resource optimization in La Palma. In the area of suicide prevention, various initiatives are underway, including public information via the stopsuicidiocanarias.com website, educational interventions, specialized training for professionals, and scientific events.
Primary Care has strengthened its Psychology service, and new psychiatrists and psychologists have joined the Community Mental Health Units and the Brief Inpatient Unit of the Hospital Universitario de La Palma. Additionally, a therapeutic “agenda,” unique in the archipelago, has been implemented to help organize the daily lives and rehabilitation of patients with severe and persistent mental disorders.
Finally, emphasis was placed on the activation of a percussive therapy program, which uses musical elements for neurocognitive training and stimulation, and the integration of non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy at the Hospital Universitario de La Palma for treating certain mental health-related pathologies. Progress was also reported on the establishment of the island's second Early Attention Unit (UAT), to be located at the Specialized Care Center (CAE) in Los Llanos de Aridane.
