This official decision, formalized by a presidential decree, is part of the autonomous region's strategy for the 2024-2027 period, which prioritizes economic diversification, attracting skilled talent, and fostering innovative sectors such as astrophysics, space, and aeronautics.
The TMT, promoted by the Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory and the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, aims to provide the islands with one of the most advanced telescopes in the world, consolidating their global leadership in astronomical research.
The declaration of the project as strategic is justified by its high socioeconomic impact, its contribution to the diversification of the Canary Islands' productive model, its capacity to generate skilled employment and attract international investment, in addition to its alignment with the innovation and sustainability objectives promoted by the autonomous government.
This project not only stands out for its scientific dimension but also for its crucial role in territorial development, especially for the island of La Palma. It will receive specific institutional support, including technical advice for fundraising and administrative coordination to streamline procedures, and will be granted the official 'Strategic for the Canary Islands' distinction, increasing its national and international visibility.
“"With this action, the firm commitment to consolidate the archipelago as a reference in high value-added sectors is reinforced, taking advantage of its competitive advantages in astronomical observation and its geostrategic position."
The impetus for the Thirty Meter Telescope is part of a broader strategy aimed at transforming the economic model of the Canary Islands, strengthening its resilience and its capacity to generate opportunities in emerging knowledge-based sectors.
