The Presidency Department of the Government of the Canary Islands has appointed the first judicial facilitator in Santa Cruz de La Palma for a criminal proceeding in the islands, aiming to support a witness in an oral trial.

This appointment, made by the General Directorate for Relations with the Justice Administration, marks the first application of the decree regulating the figure of expert personnel acting as facilitators. The regulation, approved by the Governing Council on September 15, aims to support individuals with disabilities and the elderly in the judicial and fiscal headquarters of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.
Minister Nieves Lady Barreto highlighted that this initiative represents progress towards a more accessible and inclusive Justice Administration, enabling equal participation for all individuals, especially those requiring specific support.
The role of the judicial facilitator is to enhance understanding and communication during legal proceedings, adapting information and interactions to the individual's needs, without overriding their will or interfering with the functions of the professionals involved.
The decree stipulates that, in addition to individuals with disabilities, those over 65 years of age may request this resource. For individuals over 80, a facilitator's intervention may be arranged proactively when the need for support is apparent.
The implementation of these measures will be progressive: starting in 2026 for criminal matters, from 2027 in civil court bodies, and from 2028 in other judicial bodies.
