After one of the worst harvests in the last four decades during 2025, which barely exceeded 800,000 kilograms of fruit, the prospects for the 2026 harvest in Lanzarote are much more optimistic. Sources from the Regulatory Council of the Lanzarote Wine Denomination of Origin are confident in tripling production, aiming to reach 2.5 million kilograms, with some even raising optimism to nearly 3 million.
This increase in production is crucial to supply the island's wineries, which are currently operating with minimal reserves after having used almost all the grapes stored between the 2024 and 2025 campaigns. The good health of the vines and the dedication of the winegrowers are key factors for these favorable forecasts.
However, the weather this month is a determining factor. Excessive humidity, such as that experienced in the second half of April, could favor the spread of downy mildew, a plague already present in the island's agriculture. Although control measures have been applied, there is a risk of weakening the vines and reducing the harvest. Furthermore, it is hoped that there will be no intense heatwaves in June and early July, as similar events in the past have ruined good forecasts.
Currently, Lanzarote's wineries, totaling more than thirty industrial establishments, have 1,821 recognized winegrowers. These farmers are responsible for cultivating 1,889 hectares dedicated to fruit production this year. The numbers of winegrowers and hectares are similar to previous years, according to data used for processing aid to the sector from the European Union, the Government of Spain, and the Canarian Executive, managed through the Regulatory Council.
Given the need for grapes, industrial wineries will maintain prices similar to previous campaigns, paying a minimum of 3 euros per kilogram. It is expected to exceed the figure of 1.5 million counter-labels from 2025. On the other hand, the Monumento al Campesino in San Bartolomé will be the setting for the qualification of last year's vintage, starting at 6:00 PM. If the assessment is very good, it will repeat the score of the previous seven years, with 2017 being the last vintage rated as excellent.
