Lanzarote bids farewell to 40-degree heat, but warmth will return

Temperatures are dropping after a heatwave, but are expected to rise again towards the weekend, with very high UV index levels persisting.

The island of Lanzarote will experience a relief from the recent high temperatures, although a return of heat is anticipated towards the weekend.

After a period of intense heat that pushed temperatures close to 40 degrees, Lanzarote will see a decrease starting this Wednesday. The meteorological station at Lanzarote Airport, managed by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), recorded a Tuesday maximum of 39.8 degrees. During that day, other locations on the island also surpassed 30 degrees, including Arrecife with 37.1 degrees and Tías with 36.9 degrees. AEMET data also indicates highs of 34.7 degrees in Haría, 33.2 in Playa Blanca, 32 in Tinajo, and 31 in La Graciosa.
The weather forecast points to a change from this Wednesday, with a notable thermal decrease, although the atmosphere will remain warm. In areas like Arrecife and Teguise, mostly clear skies and highs near 30 degrees are expected. In Las Cucharas, AEMET predicts a Wednesday maximum of 30 degrees, compared to Tuesday's 34 degrees.
Thursday will continue the downward trend compared to the heatwave's peak values. For Las Cucharas, the forecast maximum is around 29 degrees, with cloudy intervals during part of the day and moderate wind. Arrecife also anticipates slightly more cloudiness in the morning before skies clear up again.
However, the thermal relief will be relative. AEMET's medium-term forecasts maintain a fully summery scenario for the coming days, indicating a progressive rise in temperatures towards the weekend. Furthermore, ultraviolet radiation will remain very high, with AEMET setting the maximum UV index for Arrecife at 9 for both Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday, within the «very high» radiation category.
