This decision comes after negotiations to transfer the management of the service to a third company did not reach a successful conclusion. The procedure is based on the contract signed in 2013 between Canal Isabel II and the Consortium, which included the possibility of transferring management to ensure the continuity of water supply on the island.
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Water Consortium, Oswaldo Betancort, explained that the primary objective was not merely to replace one company with another, but to guarantee a substantial improvement in service quality for the citizens of Lanzarote. Despite the Consortium's efforts to find an orderly solution, Canal Gestión failed to reach an agreement with another entity, leading to the decision to terminate the contract.
“"The Consortium has always acted with seriousness and responsibility, seeking the best solution for users."
The termination is based on a file initiated by the Water Consortium due to Canal Gestión's repeated breaches of contract. Among the deficiencies noted are poor infrastructure maintenance, failure to repair leaks and breakdowns, and insufficient execution of committed investments. These shortcomings have resulted in water losses exceeding 30%, well above the contract's stipulations, affecting the quality and regularity of supply in Lanzarote.
The decision is supported by the Government of Canarias and the State Administration, who have shown sensitivity to the island's water situation. The Water Councillor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, assured that the process has been rigorous and legal, and that Canal Gestión is obligated to continue providing the service until a new solution is implemented.
The termination proposal will be presented at the next General Assembly of the Water Consortium. Once the agreement is adopted, it will be sent to the Canarian Consultative Council, which must issue its report within a maximum of 40 days, thus seeking to guarantee a more efficient and sustainable water service for Lanzarote.
