Units of the Spanish Army, specifically from the Soria 9 Infantry Regiment, have commenced surveillance operations in Lanzarote, conducting foot and vehicle patrols to enhance security.

Starting Wednesday, April 8, personnel from the Soria 9 Infantry Regiment, part of the Canarias XVI Brigade of the Spanish Army, began patrolling the island of Lanzarote. These activities, which include both foot and vehicle patrols, aim to strengthen surveillance, act as a deterrent, and ensure the security of terrestrial spaces under national sovereignty in the islands, as reported by the Ministry of Defense.
These operations are integrated into the broader framework of Permanent Operations, one of the essential contributions of the Armed Forces (FAS) to National Security during peacetime. The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that these missions underscore the FAS's commitment to the comprehensive defense of the territory and its capacity to anticipate any eventuality that could compromise stability.
The deployment not only enables effective environmental surveillance but also facilitates a deeper understanding of the terrain and the social reality of Lanzarote. Furthermore, it promotes the integration of military personnel into the local community and consolidates the presence of the Armed Forces in the region, as explained by Defense.
Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, who leads the Canary Islands Command of the Spanish Army, also holds the position of Commander of the Terrestrial Operational Command (CMOT). This role involves planning presence and surveillance operations not only in the Canary Islands but also in Ceuta, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands, maintaining constant coordination with relevant civil and military authorities.
