Unai de Ugarte, representing the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, secured a distinguished second place in the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup, a competition that brought together 140 sailors in the Mallorcan town of Pollença. The presence of the class's world champion and runner-up added an extra layer of challenge to the event.
The sailing conditions were marked by westerly winds and continuous changes in direction. On the opening day, only one race could be completed, where Unai de Ugarte managed to finish in 19th position. On Saturday, with northeasterly winds reaching 14 knots, the Canarian sailor achieved a fifth place and two race victories, thus presenting his credentials for the final podium.
The final day on Sunday saw Unai de Ugarte perfectly adapt to the westerly wind, securing a second and a third place that guaranteed him the silver medal overall. Mateo Roa, also from the club, reached the gold fleet and was the third-best Canarian competitor. Adriana Bravo de Laguna and Fayna Tavío competed in the women's category, battling against the adverse wind conditions.
The club's coach, Hugo Torres, highlighted the difficulty of the race course and the high level of the fleet. The president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, Julio Romero, congratulated Unai de Ugarte on his achievement and extended congratulations to Mateo Roa, Adriana Bravo de Laguna, and Fayna Tavío for representing the club in one of the most important national calendar competitions.
