The Gáldar City Council has taken a significant step in transforming its historic center by laying the first stone for two key projects: the construction of a car park, sports court, and open space at the former courts of the IES Saulo Torón, and the renovation of the old ONCE building, which will house the future municipal library, municipal radio, and new cultural spaces.
The event was attended by the president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales; the mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa; the first deputy mayor, Julio Mateo Castillo; the Councilor for Urban Planning, Heriberto Reyes; and the delegate in the Canary Islands for Trop Obras y Proyectos S.L., Miguel Suárez de Tangil Escandell, along with members of the municipal corporation.
The total investment for both projects amounts to five million euros. Four million comes from the Additional Investment Plan for the Municipalities of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. The car park construction, awarded for 3.4 million euros, is financed with 2.5 million from the Cabildo and municipal funds. The purchase of the ONCE building cost one million euros, and its renovation will require half a million, both funded by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.
Antonio Morales highlighted the coordination between administrations for the island's development, mentioning plans such as the Cooperation Plan and FDCAN. He noted that the Additional Investment Plan aims for strategic projects that generate economic activity and improve quality of life, like the projects presented today in Gáldar.
The mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, emphasized planning and anticipation of the municipality's needs, describing the initiatives as solid projects to transform the city. He highlighted the public demand for parking in the historic center and the recovery of the emblematic ONCE building.
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Heriberto Reyes, stated that the works reflect the technical work carried out to provide Gáldar with modern infrastructure, improving public services and citizens' quality of life.
The new car park building at the IES Saulo Torón will feature 141 spaces, charging points for electric vehicles, and a public open space above the infrastructure, including a landscaped plaza, a multi-sport court, a children's play area, changing rooms, and commercial units. The investment is 3.4 million euros.
Subsequently, the authorities visited the old ONCE building, which will be renovated to house the new municipal library, municipal radio, and cultural spaces. The total investment for this property, including its acquisition and renovation, is 1.5 million euros, funded by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.
