The Barrial football field in Gáldar hosted the 'Al Golpito' initiative, which promotes active and healthy aging for individuals over 60 through adapted football.

The project ‘Al Golpito’, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families, and jointly developed by the foundations of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas and Club Deportivo Tenerife, aims to foster active and healthy aging among people over 60 years old. The activity took place this Tuesday at the Barrial football field.
Various local and regional authorities attended the event, including the mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa Monzón; the Vice-Minister of Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francisco Candil, and other municipal representatives. The project uses adapted football, in its walking football modality and with simple rules, as a tool to improve physical activity, socialization, and emotional well-being for participants.
In addition to sports practice, ‘Al Golpito’ includes other activities such as guided routes, volunteer actions, and stadium visits, with the aim of creating meeting spaces and combating unwanted loneliness among seniors. Mayor Teodoro Sosa highlighted the importance of hosting this initiative in Gáldar, emphasizing that it "does not look at the age on the identity card", but rather the desire to stay active and participate in society.
Sosa stressed that "there is no age for practicing sports" and highlighted the work of specialized monitors who ensure safety and correct exercise execution, preventing injuries. He encouraged seniors in Gáldar to participate in these initiatives to enjoy an active life and recalled the various municipal projects aimed at this goal, reaffirming the municipality's commitment to being a "benchmark in senior policies".
For his part, Vice-Minister Francisco Candil explained that the initiative seeks to "promote active aging, intergenerational solidarity, and foster a playful approach to the senior population of the Canary Islands through football and physical activity". The project is funded by the Government of the Canary Islands and supported by sports foundations.
