The Government of the Canary Islands has approved a decree project to assume environmental assessment competencies for the municipality of Moya, in Gran Canaria, joining 27 other municipalities.

The Governing Council of the Canary Islands has given the green light to assume environmental assessment competencies for the municipality of Moya. This delegation, requested by the City Council itself and provided for in the Land Law, joins those of 27 other municipalities that have already adopted this measure.
The Minister of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion, and Water, Manuel Miranda, highlighted that the initiative responds to the lack of human and financial resources in many municipalities, especially those facing demographic challenges, to process environmental reports. These reports are crucial for urban planning and socioeconomic development, including housing construction and job creation.
Once the decree comes into effect, the Autonomous Commission for Environmental Assessment will assume the competence for the strategic environmental assessment of Moya's municipal urban planning instruments, as well as the environmental impact assessment of projects to be processed by the City Council.
Miranda recalled that the Government collaborates with municipalities to update planning and promote projects. The Ministry is processing several general plans, and through the public company Gesplan, offers technical assistance. Furthermore, subsidies for general plans have been reinstated, totaling over eight million euros, and a legal consultation office has been established.
