The capital of Fuerteventura currently lacks an operational library service in the afternoons and on weekends, a circumstance that negatively impacts students and other users, especially in the weeks leading up to the University Access Exam (PAU).
This situation stems from the renovation of the Municipal Library, a project announced by the City Council on April 15, 2025. The works were budgeted at 326,865 euros with an execution period of seven months. However, a year after its announcement, the works are still ongoing, and the center is not fully operational, as the currently available space only opens in the mornings, according to a complaint from an opposition group within the municipal council.
The limited hours directly affect students, many of whom finish classes at 2:00 PM. A spokesperson for the opposition group has described this situation as "incomprehensible."
“"This is not about big headlines or empty promises. It's about guaranteeing a basic service. It's about not failing a generation whose future is at stake in a few weeks, and all library users who can only use the facilities for a few hours a day."
The opposition party has linked this issue to the approaching PAU, scheduled between June 2 and 5. They believe that the lack of adequate study spaces harms not only high school students but also university students and civil service candidates.
Therefore, the opposition group has urged the governing team to urgently enable study spaces in the afternoons, extend service during weekends, and publish a clear timeline for the completion of the Municipal Library's renovation works.
