The council, in coordination with the Fuerteventura Island Council, has maintained a firm stance on the implementation of new energy infrastructures. Its proposal is clear: the relocation of the El Charco thermal power plant must take place in the Los Llanos Pelados (Zurita) area, adjacent to the environmental complex, in line with the General Urban Planning Plan and previous institutional agreements.
However, an analysis of the state procedure's evolution and actions stemming from the energy emergency declaration suggests considering other areas within the municipality, specifically the La Herradura zone. Energy generation facilities are already being implemented in this area, and business proposals are emerging within the framework of the aforementioned procedure.
“"This City Council's criterion has been clear from the outset: the relocation of the El Charco thermal power plant must be carried out in Zurita, as stipulated in the municipal planning and the institutional agreements reached."
Given this situation, the Puerto del Rosario City Council has formally conveyed its concerns through institutional letters addressed to both the Government of the Canary Islands and the State. These communications urge enhanced coordination between administrations to ensure energy planning that is consistent with the island's territorial model and the actual needs of the island's electricity system.
The current trend in energy matters leans towards distributed generation, fostering better integration between conventional and renewable energies, as well as greater efficiency and resilience of the electricity system.
To address this issue, a face-to-face meeting has been scheduled for May 18, at the request of the Puerto del Rosario City Council. This meeting will involve the mayor and the counselor for Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, aiming to strengthen institutional dialogue and advance in finding coordinated solutions. The council reiterates that the Puerto del Rosario General Plan already designates Zurita as the ideal location for this type of infrastructure.
