The Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of La Gomera, and the Hermigua City Council have launched a pilot project to implement high-efficiency irrigation systems in banana farms within the municipality.

The initiative, funded with 190,000 euros for the 2026-2027 period, aims to transform the current water management model. The project will be carried out on four farms in the Hermigua Valley, covering a total area of 13,000 square meters, where traditional high-consumption methods will be replaced by drip irrigation, sensors, and automation.
The main goal is to maximize water resource utilization, reduce costs for farmers, and improve farm yields. This experience will serve as a demonstration model to evaluate the feasibility of extending these techniques to other areas of La Gomera and the rest of the Archipelago, addressing the challenges posed by climate change and scarce rainfall.

"This action will allow for the analysis of different systems aimed at maximizing the comprehensive use of irrigation water, focusing especially on more efficient use of resources and fertilizers."

In parallel, authorities have formalized the territorial and environmental legalization of two historic livestock farms on the island. This process, which has already regularized 38 facilities during the current term, seeks to provide legal certainty to local producers, allowing sheep and goat farms to modernize and access public subsidies.
