The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, visited the workshop of sculptor Paco Curbelo in San Bartolomé, Lanzarote, to oversee the beginning of the work on the sculpture dedicated to La Graciosa. This initiative aims to complete the representation of all the islands of the archipelago at the main entrance of the institution.
“"We could not allow La Graciosa not to be at the entrance of the Parliament. Until now, seven islands have been represented, but with this new sculpture, all of us will be there."
The choice of sculptor Paco Curbelo was positively evaluated by the president, who highlighted his recognized career in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, as well as his personal connection to La Graciosa. The artist expressed his pride in this commission, considering it a significant artistic challenge.
The new work will maintain aesthetic coherence with the legacy of artist José Abad, whose sculptures already adorn the space. The piece will incorporate the burgado (a type of marine shell) as a representative symbol of La Graciosa, integrating a recognizable icon of the island into a contemporary proposal that harmonizes with the parliamentary environment. The sculpture will be located next to José Abad's original creation, consolidating the representation of the eight Canary Islands in the seat of popular sovereignty.
