The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Department of Cultural Heritage, has launched a participatory process to allow citizens to define the uses and revitalization strategy for the historic Casas de La Florida, a rural architectural complex in the municipality of Tuineje.

The initiative aims to involve residents, experts, and professionals in the rehabilitation and enhancement of this emblematic space. The first community activation session took place at the Gran Tarajal Library, marking the beginning of a process that will include diagnostic phases, workshops, and the drafting of a final document.
The Casas de La Florida, located in Tuineje, represent a valuable example of traditional Majorero rural architecture, with traditional buildings constructed from stone, lime, sand, and mud. The complex also houses ethnographic assets linked to agricultural and livestock activities, such as animal shelters, cisterns, small ponds, gavias (traditional irrigation systems), and the remains of an old tahona (mill).

"The rehabilitation of the Casas de la Florida offers a unique opportunity to link the conservation of material heritage with citizen participation and territorial revitalization."

According to official sources, the main objective of this mediation process is to foster dialogue among all involved parties, ensuring that the recovery of the Casas de La Florida is not merely a technical intervention but integrates the community's vision for the future of the space. The project is coordinated by a social worker and researcher, who envisions the recovery as a collective project of identity and social cohesion, transforming the houses into a vibrant space for gathering, learning, and cultural projection.
The La Florida complex, with approximately 300 years of history, is part of Fuerteventura's Public Historical Heritage. Its traditional dwellings, some dating back to the 18th century, are scattered and preserve the rural memory of a small, now uninhabited village. This hamlet was the scene of English pirate incursions, and historical battles such as Tamacite and Llano Florido took place nearby.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura acquired the Caserío de La Florida in 2023, incorporating it into the island's Public Cultural Heritage. This operation, which closed for less than 200,000 euros, was made possible through the cooperation of the former owners. In October 2025, the Cabildo and the Tuineje City Council approved the perimeter fencing project to protect the complex and ensure visitor safety, including the installation of informational panels.
