The municipality of San Sebastián de La Gomera is preparing to celebrate Canary Islands Day with a tribute to gofio, an emblematic food of the island. The planned program will feature talks, ethnographic exhibitions, and workshops exploring the history of local agriculture, from cereal sowing and harvesting to the milling process.
The importance of gofio in the traditional diet and its gastronomic evolution will be highlighted, presenting innovative recipes that incorporate it as a main ingredient. The mayor, Angélica Padilla, emphasized gofio's role in the Gomeran economy and culture, calling it an essential food for generations and a source of income for many families. Cereal plantations and mills have been key elements in the island's landscape and social life.
The celebration will include the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands, through Volcanic Experience, and the participation of Cristina Mendoza, owner of the Molino de Gofio Imendi. This company has been recognized for combining tradition and innovation, offering varieties such as chickpea gofio or gluten-free gofio.
Additionally, the Asociación de Mayores Iballa will organize the traditional Paseo Romero through the historic center. The mayor stressed that on May 30th, the island's identity and history will be celebrated with gastronomic tastings and musical performances.
