The Plenary Hall of the City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera hosted the official presentation of the Sailing School, which will operate during the months of July and August. This initiative is the result of collaboration between the City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera and the Royal Canary Islands Sailing Federation, with the support of the Cabildo de La Gomera, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the sponsorship of the DISA Foundation and Baleària Canarias.
The mayoress, Angélica Padilla, expressed her enthusiasm for the return of this sports project, highlighting its importance for the municipality and its ability to attract residents and visitors of all ages. She emphasized the commitment to the Sailing Federation and the support from the Port Authority, which will allow the project to continue beyond the summer, taking advantage of the ideal conditions in the bay of San Sebastián for year-round sailing.
With the support of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de La Gomera, continuity is expected for this activity, which will offer introductory and advanced courses for children, youth, and adults this summer.
For his part, the Sports Councilor of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Guillermo Medina, described the recovery of the Sailing Campus as excellent news for the island, allowing citizens, especially young people, to reconnect with a sport closely linked to the maritime environment. Medina highlighted that the initiative promotes values such as coexistence, respect for the environment, and teamwork.
The director of the Royal Canary Islands Sailing Federation, Guiomar Bonilla, announced that, in addition to sports activities, work is underway with the Canary Islands Government's Department of Education to launch the first Level I and Level II Sports Technician in Sailing course in La Gomera. This aims to train future professionals in the nautical-sports sector on the island, creating job opportunities for young people.
The reopening of the school aligns with the commitment of the Royal Canary Islands Sailing Federation to sports promotion throughout the archipelago, with the backing of the DISA Foundation and Baleària Canarias as sponsors. The shipping company thus joins the efforts of public administrations to promote sailing in the Canary Islands.
Morning activities, from 09:00 to 13:00, will be aimed at children aged 8 to 15. Afternoon sessions, from 16:00 to 19:00, will be for young people and adults aged 16 and over. The school will have 10 Optimist dinghies, a raquero training boat, and 3 windsurf boards.
