A delegation from the Association of Municipalities of Mauritania (AMM), comprising mayors and representatives, visited the facilities of the Mancomunidad del Sureste of Gran Canaria this Thursday. The primary objective was to enhance institutional cooperation and facilitate the exchange of best practices in local public service management.
During the visit, attended also by María Concepción Brito, president of the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (FECAM), the delegation gained firsthand knowledge of the Mancomunidad del Sureste's management models. Key aspects discussed included waste collection and treatment, water management, citizen awareness campaigns, and the organization of municipal services tailored for small and medium-sized municipalities.
Óscar Hernández, president of the Mancomunidad and mayor of Agüimes, expressed his satisfaction in sharing the entity's accumulated experience. He highlighted that many solutions developed in their region, particularly in water management, desalination, purification, and sustainable development, can serve as a reference for Mauritanian municipalities.
For his part, Bamba Sidi Daramane, president of the AMM, thanked the hosts for the welcome and the opportunity to learn directly from the Canarian experience. He noted significant interest in adapting these practices to Mauritania, especially in waste management, where they aim to improve efficiency and acquire the necessary materials for collection and treatment.
The Mauritanian delegation also included the Consul General of Mauritania in the Canary Islands, Baba Sid’Ahmed, and the Director General of Decentralization and Local Development of Mauritania, Ahmedou Abdella. This meeting underscores the Mancomunidad del Sureste's commitment to institutional cooperation and knowledge exchange, valuing the experience of municipalities such as Agüimes, Ingenio, and Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
