Two venues of the Agüimes City Council, located on Doctor Joaquin Artiles and Barbuzano streets, house the exhibitions ‘Geography of LGTBIQ+ Resistances’ and ‘20 Years of Equal Marriage’. These retrospectives focus on the collective's achievements after decades of struggle and pay homage to those who have contributed to a fairer and more egalitarian society in Spain and the Canary Islands.
The exhibition ‘20 Years of Equal Marriage’, promoted by the Ministry of Equality of the Government of Spain, covers the two decades since the law's approval. Through panels, images, and documents, the exhibition highlights the role of social groups and movements in achieving this right and the importance of preserving the memory of these advances.
Meanwhile, ‘Geography of LGTBIQ+ Resistances’, supported by the Government of Canarias, focuses on the Canarian scope. It recovers testimonies from individuals who suffered repression and discrimination, making visible life stories marked by persecution and social exclusion, a part of the archipelago's recent history often unknown to new generations.
The inauguration was attended by the Mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández; the Director General of Social Services and Immigration of the Government of Canarias, Elisabeth Santana; the Councillor for Equality and Social Services of the Agüimes City Council, Eva López; the Director General of Diversity of the Government of Canarias, Celso David Mendoza Negrín; and the President of the LGTBI collective Marikas Rurales, Daniel Alemán.
Both exhibitions aim to remind that current rights and freedoms are the result of a long process of social demand and commitment. They invite citizens to reflect on the path taken, recognize the legacy of those who led these struggles, and keep historical memory alive to continue advancing towards a more inclusive and diverse society.
