The Agüimes City Council organized a guided tour of the Bocacangrejo Salt Pans, an ethnographic enclave in Vargas with over two centuries of history, to promote the value of its virgin sea salt.

The Bocacangrejo Salt Pans, located one kilometer from Vargas beach, are one of the few active virgin sea salt production sites in Gran Canaria. A group of citizens participated in a tour organized by the Agüimes City Council to learn about its ethnographic and environmental significance.
During the visit, the characteristics of the local flora were detailed, including endemic species adapted to the marine environment such as sea pineapple and Canary Islands chaparro. The area also serves as a crucial resting point for migratory birds crossing the Atlantic.
The salt extraction process at the salt pans follows traditional techniques unchanged for centuries. Seawater is channeled into pools where the salt is manually harvested, sun-dried, and transported for sifting and artisanal packaging.
This traditional extraction method ensures virgin salt, without artificial processing or refining. Its artisanal production has received multiple awards between 2018 and 2023, including the award for 'Best Innovation, Image, and Presentation' and the title of Best Sea Salt of the Canary Islands in 2018.
The virgin sea salt from Bocacangrejo has been awarded the Grand Gold Medal at the Official Agrocanarias Sea Salt Competition on five occasions between 2018 and 2023. Its 'Flor de Sal' variety also received the highest distinction in 2018 and 2022. Along with La Florida, Cuatro Picos, and Tenefé, these are the only four active salt pans in Gran Canaria.
