The Ingenio City Council has reinforced police presence at Gran Canaria Airport during the summer campaign with a special surveillance operation focused on public passenger transport. The aim is to prevent irregular practices, improve security, and regulate traffic within the airport premises, continuing the municipal commitment to monitor compliance with regulations by operators.
The operational balance shows 713 violations related to traffic and parking, which were a primary area of intervention. Officers specifically addressed improper parking and other infractions affecting the correct use of airport roads and reserved spaces.
Regarding passenger transport, over 315 checks were conducted on transfer services and documents for taxis and VTC vehicles. Several services were found to be lacking required documentation or having deficiencies, leading to corresponding citations.
Controls also extended to the technical and administrative conditions of vehicles. More than 365 checks were performed on mandatory insurance and ITV (vehicle inspection) for taxis, buses, and VTCs, resulting in 14 citations for ITV issues and four for mandatory insurance irregularities.
Compliance with professional transport regulations was also monitored, with over 90 checks on tachograph installation plates, driving and rest times, activity selector usage, and mandatory documentation. Some irregularities were reported to the Labor Inspectorate.
Taxi service inspections included at least 65 checks on taximeters, identifying vehicles that had not undergone periodic inspections. Verification of service authorization and other specific obligations for this transport mode were also carried out.
Services operating without the required transfer or with deficient documentation were detected, along with an action against irregular passenger transport. Citations were also issued for improper circulation in reserved zones, and specific checks were conducted on professional drivers and vehicles.
In terms of road safety, driver drug tests were administered, resulting in two positive cases (one for THC and one for cocaine) among VTC drivers. Vehicles were immobilized, and citations were processed.
The Ingenio City Council values the preventive activity, which has verified compliance with regulations for hundreds of vehicles and services. The operation aims to balance the defense of legally operating professionals with the protection of users and the proper use of the complex airport environment.
These controls address requests from AENA to enhance traffic management at the airport and appeals from transport professionals to combat illicit operations and ensure regulatory compliance.
The police work combines traffic regulation and safety with the oversight of professional activity, checking authorizations, documentation, ITV, insurance, taximeters, tachographs, and driving/rest times. The goal is to maintain mobility, prevent congestion in a strategic location for Gran Canaria, and protect legal professionals and users.
