The initiative, whose second phase is already underway, was detailed during a meeting between municipal representatives and the island's councilor for the Primary Sector and president of the Insular Water Consortium. During the encounter, technical solutions were presented to optimize supply in mid-altitude and summit areas.
In recent months, the City Council has worked closely with irrigation communities to design a network adapted to the real needs of the territory. The goal is to leverage the flow from the Chira-Soria jump to create an efficient, stable, and sustainable distribution system that guarantees the necessary water for agriculture throughout the municipality's upland area.
The project envisions water from Chira-Soria initially reaching a reservoir located in El Sequero. Subsequently, the supply would be diverted to a new reservoir planned for the El Mundillo area in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, an infrastructure that could cover nearly 27 hectares. Additionally, the renovation and expansion of agricultural irrigation supply networks are anticipated.
During the meeting, the current state of existing hydraulic infrastructures, network capacity, and the specific demands of each agricultural nucleus were also analyzed, in order to plan a network capable of meeting the present and future needs of the primary sector.
“"It will be able to guarantee water supply to the entire upland area of the municipality."
The island councilor positively assessed the project and highlighted the joint work carried out by the City Council, irrigation communities, and the Insular Water Consortium. He also expressed the Cabildo de Gran Canaria's willingness to collaborate financially to make the initiative viable.
