The Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council approved in plenary session the 2026 Honors and Distinctions appointments, recognizing physician José Sánchez Alvarado as Hijo Predilecto and social worker Hortensia Pérez Cabrera as Hija Adoptiva.

The plenary session of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council, held this Thursday at the El Paradero Senior Center due to ongoing works at the Consistorial Houses, approved the 2026 Honors and Distinctions appointments. Physician José Sánchez Alvarado will be named Hijo Predilecto, and municipal social worker Hortensia Pérez Cabrera will receive the title of Hija Adoptiva at an institutional ceremony next Friday, September 18th, at the Víctor Jara theater.
At the same ceremony, the Ídolos de Tirajana awards will be presented to the Local Assembly of Cruz Roja in Santa Lucía de Tirajana (Social), businessman José Bolaños (Economic), municipal worker Antonio Ramírez (Sports), the Agrupación Folklórica Amor Canario (Identity), the municipal Taller de Animación (Animation Workshop) along with Francisco Alemán (Culture), Antonia Alí (Solidarity), and Noelia Vera (Equality and Diversity).
Mayor Francisco García justified the nomination of José Sánchez Alvarado as Hijo Predilecto by his over four decades dedicated to caring for the health of several generations of residents, highlighting his closeness, humanity, and service vocation. The recognition of Hortensia Pérez Cabrera as Hija Adoptiva is due to her significant work in the municipality's Social Services during crucial years for the decentralization of these responsibilities.
García also detailed the merits of the Ídolos de Tirajana recipients, emphasizing the community commitment of the Cruz Roja, the family entrepreneurship of José Bolaños León, the extensive work of Antonio Ramírez Santana in sports programs for over forty years, and the research and dissemination of Canarian folklore by the Agrupación Folklórica Amor Canario.
Furthermore, the municipal Taller de Animación was valued as a benchmark for citizen participation and artistic creativity, with the notable role of its coordinator Paco Alemán. The mayor highlighted the commitment of Antonia Gloria Ali Santana to the founding of the Association of Women for Peace and Solidarity with Palestine, and the example of bravery and authenticity set by Noelia Vera Rodríguez in promoting the visibility and normalization of affective-sexual diversity.
The plenary also approved actions for the 2027 annual period of the Cooperation Plan with Municipalities (PCA 2024-2027). 158,526 euros will be allocated for the conditioning of a plot for a public municipal parking, 603,095 euros for the San Rafael square, and 400,000 euros for the improvement of the Pozo Izquierdo water supply network.
In other motions, a unanimous institutional declaration of support for the Venezuelan people following a recent earthquake was approved. The Vox Municipal Group presented a motion, rejected by the majority, to implement shaded areas in children's play and rest areas, and another regarding the abandonment of plots near the ICOT Health Center, which was debated.
The motion by Nueva Canarias–Frente Amplio Canarista (NC-FAC) on municipal housing policies was supported by the majority, with contributions from various councilors, except for Vox. La Fortaleza's motion for a comprehensive maintenance plan for municipal sports facilities did not receive majority support, while another from the same group for the recovery of Santa Lucía de Tirajana's coastline was approved.
