The Sureste Commonwealth, chaired by Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes, and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, led by its president Antonio Morales, have visited the expansion works of the Sureste Sea Water Desalination Plant (IDAM). The plant, located in Pozo Izquierdo, municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, will increase its daily production capacity by 15%, rising from 33,000 to 38,000 cubic meters. This improvement will reinforce the water security of the region, which already exceeds 138,000 inhabitants and whose supply needs continue to grow.
The total investment for this project amounts to 3,059,672.80 euros, financed by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Cooperation Plan with Commonwealths 2024-2027 and the Insular Council of Water of Gran Canaria. Óscar Hernández highlighted the plant's extraordinary service since its commissioning, guaranteeing supply and enabling economic and social development. He nevertheless stressed the need to continue expanding and modernizing hydraulic infrastructures in the face of demographic growth and new demands.
The project also integrates technological innovation, with new solutions from the Canary Islands Technological Institute (ITC) aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing the production costs of desalinated water, a particularly relevant aspect given the high energy consumption associated with such facilities.
This expansion is part of the Commonwealth's strategy to adequately dimension water production, distribution, and storage according to population growth and the effects of climate change. The action consolidates a water management model that has made the Southeast of Gran Canaria an international benchmark in sustainability, innovation, and efficient use of water resources.
