This action will reinforce the supply of drinking water for more than 138,000 people in the municipalities of Agüimes, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and Ingenio. The plant is crucial for ensuring the water supply in the region.
The works, attended by various institutional authorities, include the expansion of the plant's building, the execution of new auxiliary infrastructures, and the incorporation of equipment that will increase desalinated water production by 15%. Output will rise from 33,000 to 38,000 cubic meters per day, strengthening the area's water security.
The president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, highlighted the plant's pioneering role against drought, noting that needs continue to grow. The subsidy from the Island Council's Institutional Cooperation Area and the Insular Water Council will allow for an increase of 5,000 cubic meters in daily desalinated water production while improving energy efficiency.
For his part, the president of the Mancomunidad del Sureste and mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, stated that the expansion is a significant milestone, as the region's population has doubled since the Mancomunidad's inception. The project guarantees supply for consumption, agriculture, and livestock, and compensates for reductions in water capture.
With an execution period of 18 months, foundation and structure work is already complete. In the coming months, enclosure, roofing, and flooring work, as well as electrical installations, will be carried out. The project incorporates technological advancements like the experimental module DESALRO 2.0, developed by the Canary Islands Technological Institute, to reduce energy consumption and position the plant as a hub for water cycle innovation.
The expansion works, which began in December 2025, are being executed by CONSTRUPLAN Construcciones y Planificación, S.L.U., with technological equipment from ACCIONA AGUA, SAU and monitoring by ICMOVE Ingeniería y Prevención SLP.
