The Ingenio City Council has removed 187 abandoned vehicles from public roads over the past ten months, launching a campaign aimed at improving municipal safety, sanitation, and appearance.

The campaign, which began in June 2025 and remains active, has received a very positive response from citizens. On Wednesday alone, 21 cars were removed, demonstrating the initiative's effectiveness.
The program includes a free service for the voluntary removal of vehicles. Owners can process the definitive deregistration of their cars at no cost, a procedure managed by the Local Police. This process covers collection by municipal tow truck and transfer to an Authorized Treatment Center (CAT) for decontamination and administrative processing with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

"From the City Council, we maintain a firm commitment to the removal of abandoned vehicles, not only to improve the image of the municipality but also to free up parking spaces and prevent the accumulation of waste that affects the environment and the quality of life of citizens."

Vanesa Martín · Mayor of Ingenio
In cases where there is no voluntary removal, the Consistory initiates a sanctioning procedure. Regulations consider abandoned vehicles as urban solid waste, with fines that can reach up to 100,000 euros in serious situations affecting the environment or safety, and up to 2,000 euros in minor cases.

"We have managed to remove 187 vehicles. I would like to emphasize the importance of citizen collaboration; residents report cases to us, facilitating the task."

Rayco Padilla · Councillor for Security of Ingenio
Furthermore, if an abandoned car lacks mandatory insurance, penalties range between 601 and 3,005 euros, in addition to the vehicle's removal and all costs being passed on to the owner. Therefore, the City Council stresses the importance of keeping vehicles in legal condition to prevent their abandonment and the negative impact on the urban environment.
