Understanding traffic signage is crucial for road safety. The extensive catalog of traffic signs, along with the incorporation of new designations by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), can lead to confusion among drivers. One such sign is the R-421, designed to adapt to current mobility trends.
The R-421 sign indicates a mandatory lane reserved for cycles and personal mobility vehicles (VMPs). This means that lanes marked with this indication are exclusively for bicycles, electric scooters, and other VMPs. The General Circulation Regulation stipulates that drivers of these vehicles must use this lane, and prohibits its use by other road users.
The DGT also includes the R-420 sign, which restricts usage solely to personal mobility vehicles.
Entering a lane marked with the R-421 sign with a car or other unauthorized vehicle constitutes a serious offense. The financial penalty for this infraction is 200 euros.
The DGT highlights that these measures aim to improve coexistence among different road users and protect the most vulnerable groups. Therefore, it reiterates the importance of knowing new signs and respecting reserved lanes.
