The Coalición Canaria group in the Gran Canaria Cabildo has requested the island government's collaboration for the recovery and enhancement of the San Fernando de Maspalomas Village.
The proposal, to be presented in the next plenary session in April, primarily aims to protect a core area considered historical heritage of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and safeguard its resident community.
“
"With this initiative, we not only highlight the village's value, but also fight for its importance, needs, and for those who reside here. It must be placed where it deserves. Let's not forget that it was the first organized settlement in Maspalomas. It represents the starting point of the tourism model that today sustains a large part of the island's economy."
The nationalists emphasize that the village cannot remain in the background and that this initiative seeks a reparation that restores dignity, attention, and importance to this settlement and its citizens. They consider a structural investment crucial to position this original core of the socio-economic transformation of the island's south, with the island government being a key player in achieving this.
According to the party, the San Fernando de Maspalomas Village is one of the most valuable urban heritage sites on the island. Its reconditioning and improvement would not only enhance its image but also grant it the place it deserves as the foundational core of Gran Canaria's tourism development.
“
"The village can become a new cultural and tourist hub, complementing the Maspalomas destination with an offer based on history, architecture, and local identity."
The rehabilitation of the village would allow for the diversification of the island's tourism product, the creation of interpretive routes and value-added cultural spaces, the revitalization of local commerce, and the attraction of investment and sustainable economic activity.
