The municipal government of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, formed by PP-AV and CC, approved in April's plenary session the report to denationalize the hammock and umbrella service. This decision has been met with strong opposition from the service workers and the socialist group, as well as from former councilors of Nueva Canarias, now part of Municipalistas Primero Canarias.
The staff assembly unanimously agreed to challenge the agreement, arguing that the economic report justifying indirect management "alters numbers and mixes services." This same impression is shared by the PSOE, which considers denationalization a "political decision" rather than a management one, according to a party spokesperson.
“"The report does not provide a fair comparison and starts from the premise that direct management is unfeasible."
The report is criticized for not accurately reflecting the service's reality, mixing hammocks with kiosks, and for inconsistencies in data, especially in cost estimates, which inflate those for direct management. A former councilor from Nueva Canarias, now with Municipalistas Primero Canarias, while advocating for municipalization, will focus on the public information period to improve the proposal and ensure job stability for the staff.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the local government defended the measure as a way to regularize a contract that expired almost 15 years ago, accusing the opposition of "misleading" the public. They argued that indirect management, through a specialized company, is the most efficient and quickest model, allowing the City Council to collect a fee without assuming risks. A departmental spokesperson added that the economic report is the result of a process initiated last December, emphasizing that indirect management optimizes resources and offers greater specialization.
During the same plenary session, other significant measures were approved, including a budget modification of 1,370,000 euros for the expansion of IES El Tablero I-Aguañac with 12 new classrooms. The official twinning with the Commonwealth of Galician Municipalities of the French Way of Santiago was also formalized, and a roundabout in Campo Internacional was named after José Cabrera Blanch, in memory of a local tourism entrepreneur. Additionally, budget modifications totaling nearly 13 million euros were approved to cover court judgments, late payment interest, and invoices for external services.
