A cargo ship flying the flag of the Comoros Islands was intercepted this weekend south of the Canary Islands with a cocaine shipment that, according to estimates, could exceed 30 tons, making it the largest seizure in Spain to date.

The operation, described as “historic” by the Unified Association of the Civil Guard (AUGC), took place off the coast of the Western Sahara. The merchant vessel, named Arconian, had departed from Sierra Leone with a declared destination of Libya before being intercepted by a Civil Guard ship.

"The crew of the vessel that made it possible, the Duque de Ahumada, once again demonstrates what this institution is made of."

Since Sunday afternoon, the vessel has been at the Naval Base in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where inspection and unloading of its holds are being carried out throughout Monday. Official authorities have maintained strict secrecy regarding the details of the operation, which is under the direction of a judge from the Audiencia Nacional.
Although the final weighing of the drugs has not yet been completed, sources close to the investigation have indicated that this haul is very likely to be the largest or one of the largest ever captured in Spain. Previous records include the 13 tons discovered in October 2024 at the port of Algeciras (Cádiz) and the 10 tons seized in January of this year west of El Hierro.
