The maintenance and cleaning service for beaches and the coastline of the Department of Maritime Affairs of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has removed over 100,000 kilos of seaweed from the city's Southern Cone coast in the last seven days. Last weekend alone, more than 60,000 kilos of seaweed were cleared in just two days.
This operation aims to mitigate the accumulation of seaweed in the fishing neighborhood of San Cristóbal and the natural pools of La Laja, to prevent its decomposition from affecting the health of residents and users of these public spaces.
Cleaning efforts have been concentrated in the San Cristóbal neighborhood, covering the area near the Torreón de San Pedro and La Puntilla beach, next to the fishing port. At La Laja beach, the seaweed has piled up mainly in the natural pool area.
The Department of Maritime Affairs reminds the public that seaweed is part of the marine ecosystem. Its removal is carried out in a controlled manner, intervening only when the accumulation of organic matter could affect the use and management of the environment, as well as public health and safety.
