Representatives from the Government of the Canary Islands and the Yaiza town council met to assess the progress of various key projects in the municipality. The meeting focused on inter-administrative coordination to address the challenges arising from population growth in southern Lanzarote.
Following the meeting, authorities visited the port of Playa Blanca, the local health center, and the educational centers CEO Montaña Roja and CEIP Playa Blanca. At the health center, the Canarian Health Service plans to carry out expansion works to improve care for residents.
For CEO Montaña Roja, the Government of the Canary Islands has allocated an investment exceeding 4.5 million euros, framed within the Strategic Plan for Educational Infrastructures of the Canary Islands 2024-2035. This allocation will allow for the creation of new spaces, specialized classrooms, and the improvement of essential services such as the dining hall, kitchen, and outdoor areas. At CEIP Playa Blanca, the installation of a shade structure has already been completed through an agreement, and actions continue to adapt the center to the growing school demand.
“"Public responses must adapt to the unique characteristics of each territory, and Yaiza clearly represents the importance of planning ahead, coordinating administrations, and strengthening public services where demographic pressure is greatest."
The Government of the Canary Islands has highlighted the need to promote effective policies that are close to the reality of citizens. It was recalled that the demographic challenge and territorial cohesion are priorities for this legislature, with the implementation of the first Strategy for Demographic Challenge and Territorial Cohesion of the Canary Islands and an action plan to align public planning with the needs of each island and municipality.
Among other commitments from the Government of the Canary Islands, the tender for the expansion of the Playa Blanca wastewater treatment plant was mentioned before the end of the year, with a multi-year investment of 11 million euros, and the modernization of the Marcastell pumping station. The institutional visit allowed for on-site monitoring of these priority actions and reaffirmed the importance of a coordinated response to support the municipality's growth with improved public services.
